Current EBU, former WBO International Cruiserweight champ; former Commonwealth, British and WBC Silver Light Heavyweight Champion, twice, a challenger for the world title – and recently turned actor in blockbuster hit, CREED. Tony Bellew is obviously no joke – and he’s recently found himself an opponent to fight. He’s also got a date. Now all they need is a venue.
Scheduled for June 4th, the Tony’s WBC World Cruiserweight title is on the line as he’s set to face South African-based southpaw, fighting out of Democratic Republic of Congo, Ilunga Makabu. Rumours are that the fight could take place in Bellew’s lifelong dream venue, Goodison Park.
He said: ‘We have made no secret of our desire to stage this bout at Goodison to recreate the scenes of the recent Creed movie – it’s a fairytale story and the club are very keen to make it happen.
‘The working date is June 4 and we hope to have venue and date confirmation sometime next week.’
Bellew is looking to face a tough opponent in Ilunga Makabu who boasts a 19 wins out of 20 with an almost 90% KO percentage.
‘It looks like the first week of June – there’s nowhere else it’s going other than Liverpool,’ he said.
‘We’re close to agreeing a venue. It’s likely to be somewhere bigger than the Echo Arena.
‘It’s always been my dream to be WBC champion of the world, every fighter who’s in the boxing business dreams of lifting that green belt.
‘I’ve done it in the movies, but I haven’t done it in real life! It would mean more to me than anything. I can’t explain the lengths I will go to to win that belt.’
