Canelo Vacates WBC Title – Says I Will Fight And Beat ‘GGG’

Fresh from knocking Amir Khan out cold with a punch that was nothing short of a thunderbolt , Saul Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) has now vacated his WBA middleweight title so that he can target the undefeated and undisputed Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in order to avoid their negotiation deadline.

“After much consideration, today, I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible.  I also informed the WBC that I will vacate its title,” Alvarez said.

“For the entirety of my career, I have taken the fights that no one wanted because I fear no man. Never has that been more true than today. I will fight ‘GGG,’ and I will beat ‘GGG’ but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines.”

After vacating his title Canelo is hopeful that he has put aside the ticking clock and both camps can negotiate without any time restrictions. He knows that every boxing fan wants to see this super fight while both fighters are in their prime. They don’t want to see a dull fight like Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, who had already passed their prime.

‘GGG’ is the current unified WBC, WBA (Super), IBF and IBO middleweight champion and aims to unify the middleweight division.

Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya while talking to the media, believes that right now Canelo is the biggest star in the sport and this is the right time for him to face ‘GGG’ and show everyone who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
